🍁 Connecting the North#

The Canada Mesh Project links LoRa activity from Newfoundland to British Columbia. We provide the central hub for documentation, community links, and live node maps.

Get Started in 3 Steps#

  1. Find Your Group: Join a Regional Community to see who is active near you.
  2. Pick Your Gear: Visit our Hardware Guide for recommendations on Canada-ready radios.
  3. Join the Map: View the Live Network Maps to find your local "mesh-neighbors".

What is LoRa and Meshing?#

LoRa (Long Range) is a low-power, long-distance radio modulation technology. It allows small devices to send data over many kilometers while using very little battery. Because it operates on license-free frequencies (906.875 MHz in North America), it is ideal for community-led networks.

Mesh Networking is a system where devices (nodes) connect directly to each other rather than relying on a central tower or internet provider.

  • In a Peer-to-Peer Mesh (like Meshtastic), every user's device can forward messages for others, making the network stronger as more people join.
  • In a Repeater-Driven Mesh (like MeshCore), fixed high-power stations form a stable "backbone" to provide consistent city-wide coverage.

Why Mesh?#

Building and using a mesh network offers several unique advantages:

  • Decentralization: The network is owned and operated by the community, not a single corporation or government entity.
  • Off-Grid Reliability: Mesh networks function independently of cellular towers and the internet, making them essential for emergency use or remote areas where traditional coverage is unavailable.
  • Privacy & Security: Communications can be encrypted, and the decentralized nature of the mesh makes it highly resistant to central points of failure or surveillance.
  • Low Cost: By using license-free spectrum and low-power hardware, enthusiasts can build wide-area coverage for a fraction of the cost of traditional infrastructure.
  • Community Resilience: Whether for hobbyist experimentation, local events, or emergency backup, the mesh connects neighbors and builders across Canada and beyond.
